Every student deserves a great education. Every family deserves a voice.
I'm a mom of five, a grandmother, and a health care professional with a Special Education degree from Augsburg. I'm running for the Lakeville Area School Board to keep our focus where it belongs: strong academics, safe kids, engaged families, and a budget that puts dollars in the classroom.
Four commitments
1. Academic Excellence, Starting with Reading and Writing
Every student in District 194 should be able to read and write with confidence. That is the foundation everything else is built on, and it is the first thing I will ask the board to measure and report on honestly. I will push for clear, public data on student achievement so families can see how our schools are actually doing.
2. Safe Students, in Every Sense
Kids need to be physically safe at school, and they need to be emotionally steady enough to learn. That means a student code of conduct that is consistently enforced, classrooms where students treat each other with respect, and teaching kids the coping skills they will need long after graduation.
3. Families as Partners
Every parent should have a real connection with their child's teacher, not just a portal login. I will work to open two way communication between families and the district, and to make sure parent concerns get an answer, not a form letter. Families who feel heard stay in District 194.
4. Responsible Budgets, Classroom First
Our district has very little wiggle room, which makes every board decision consequential. I will ask hard questions about whether our dollars are reaching students and teachers. Special Education is one place I want that scrutiny, because I have been in those classrooms and I want to know whether the funding matches the need.
Meet Angie Skavnak
My name is Angie Skavnak, and I’m a mother, grandmother, former educator, and proud member of the Lakeville community. I grew up in a small town as one of nine children and later attended Augsburg College, where I studied teaching and Special Education. I’ve raised four older children and still have a son at home who attends Lakeville Area Schools. As both an educator and a parent, I’ve seen firsthand the difference great teachers and strong schools can make in a child’s life.
My background in Special Education gave me the opportunity to work closely with students, families, and teachers and taught me that every student brings different strengths, challenges, and needs to the classroom. I believe good leadership starts with listening. As a School Board member, I will seek input before making decisions, communicate openly with families and the community, and approach difficult issues thoughtfully. I will also work to ensure our public resources are used responsibly and focused on providing the best possible education for our students.
I’m running for Lakeville Area School Board because I want to make a positive difference in the schools that have meant so much to my own family. I will put students at the center of every decision while supporting our teachers, engaging families, and working collaboratively to strengthen District 194. I’m ready to listen, lead, ask thoughtful questions, and help ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
